Easy Bike Rental System by VAG: Frelo

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of carsharing websites and apps. The new and more environmentally friendly option that is becoming more and more common is bike rental service apps. Considering that Freiburg is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities, it is no surprise that VAG is about to bring its own bike rental service Frelo into action starting from 17th of May. Read this post to learn more about Frelo!

Spontaneous and Green

Let’s say you left home without a bike that day and missed the last tram or bus to home and you need to go back home somehow! Or you have a couple of visitors whom you want to show around Freiburg by bike -let’s admit it is a different kind of experience and freedom to ride a bike in Freiburg. Whatever the case is you can spontaneously and easily loan a bike by Frelo. Many German cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Köln have already bike rental systems. It is not only a convenient way to commute and discover but also an eco-friendlier one for sure.

(Not the actual bike)

How Does it Work?

VAG introduces Frelo in their website as a “comfortable, cost-effective and climate-friendly” way that you can combine with other transportation modes to reach to your destination. First test rides (which were carried out about a month ago by selected Freiburgers) passed the test in terms of smoothness of the ride, comfort and the looks of the bike – characteristic red colour of VAG.

To get started, you must register first under www.frelo-freiburg.de for free. Then you should download the app VAG mobile. With the app on your smartphone, you can borrow bikes at all Frelo stations and return them anytime. The payment is also made via the app. With the same account, you can rent up to four bikes at a time – so ideal for your guests. If you don’t own a smartphone then you can buy a customer card from VAG centers.

For students, the first 30 minutes of each trip is free. This also applies to students of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Thereafter, the base rate of 1 € per half hour applies. The complete tariff system (monthly, annual, etc.) of Frelo can be found on https://www.nextbike.de/en/pricelist.

(An Alternative to taking the tram, perhaps)

Where Are Frelo Stations?

On the map, you will find all previously planned Frelo stations. Most of them are ready to use beginning on 17 May. In the app VAG mobile, you can check up to date, where there are rental bikes available. Once you are at a terminal there are instructions to be followed or you can simply scan the QR-code with the app. Once you do this the frame lock opens automatically. The lock opens automatically so never rent a bike from afar. You can park your bike without stopping the rental. Activate the park mode in your app and close the lock afterward. When you want to use your bike again simply deactivate it again to continue your ride. You can return your bike at any official Frelo station. Park your bark to the official station (there is a fee unless you leave it somewhere else). Close the lock by pressing down the lever. Refresh your app to make sure the rental has been stopped.

Enjoy the Ride

Frelo seems to be a very good option for students who don’t want to buy a bike, lost a bike or rent more than one bike at a time. That is why we have tried to introduce this new and useful service to you in this post. If you have further questions and inquiries, you can visit the official websites (the links are below). Enjoy your ride and be safe while cycling!
